Why horses need dentistry

Understanding Your Horse’s Dental Health

A horse’s teeth continue to erupt gradually throughout much of its life, with natural wear occurring through the chewing process. In a natural environment, prolonged grazing throughout the day helps maintain relatively even wear across the teeth.

However, modern management practices, including stabling, restricted grazing periods and the feeding of hard feeds, can alter natural chewing patterns. This may contribute to uneven dental wear and the development of abnormalities that can cause discomfort, affect chewing efficiency and compromise overall oral health.

Common Dental Problems

One of the most frequently encountered dental abnormalities is the formation of sharp enamel points along the edges of the cheek teeth. These can cause irritation, ulceration and, in more severe cases, cuts to the cheeks and tongue.

Uneven dental wear can also result in the development of hooks, ramps and wave formations across the dental arcades. These abnormalities can interfere with normal jaw movement and reduce the horse’s ability to chew effectively.

Other dental concerns include loose, fractured or missing teeth, as well as diastemata (abnormal gaps between teeth), where food material can become trapped and contribute to discomfort, inflammation and periodontal disease.

Recognising the Signs of Dental Problems

Dental discomfort is not always immediately obvious, as horses can be remarkably good at concealing signs of pain. However, there are several indicators that may suggest your horse requires a dental examination:

It is important to remember that dental abnormalities can develop without producing obvious external signs. Regular examinations are therefore essential for identifying problems before they become more advanced.

How Often Should Your Horse Have a Dental Examination?

Most horses benefit from a thorough dental examination at least once every 12 months. However, depending on individual requirements, some horses may benefit from more frequent examinations, typically every six months.

Young horses undergoing dental development, older horses and those in regular or demanding work may require closer monitoring to ensure their teeth remain healthy and functional.

At RJW EQUINE, we assess every horse individually and provide recommendations based on their age, dental condition, management and workload, ensuring an appropriate dental care programme is established for their ongoing health and comfort.
